Daniel's father, University of Edinburgh Professor John Rutherford (1695 - 1779), developed the clinical instruction methodology that's currently employed in every medical school around the world. John's daughter Ann married my cousin, Sir Walter Scott.

Sir Ernest Rutherford (1871 - 1937), the father of nuclear physics, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. He was a not-so-distant cousin of Daniel Rutherford. Ernest places higher than Albert Einstein in many polls of the scientific community as to the ranking of all-time greatest scientists. He was, of course, the posthumous namesake of the chemical element rutherfordium.

Both Daniel and Ernest were direct descendants of Robertus Dominus de Rodyrforde (1120 - ?). He's the primogenitor of the Scottish Clan Rutherford.
