Werewolves are one of the most iconic creatures in fantasy and horror. These legendary shapeshifters, cursed to transform into wolves or wolf-like monsters under the full moon, have been a part of folklore for centuries. Whether depicted as mindless killers or tragic figures struggling with their inner nature, werewolves continue to captivate audiences across books, films, and mythology.
The concept of humans transforming into wolves dates back to ancient times. The Greeks told the story of Lycaon, a king cursed by Zeus to become a wolf after offending the gods—an origin that gave rise to the term lycanthropy. In medieval Europe, werewolf legends became widespread, often linked to witchcraft and dark pacts with the devil. These creatures were feared as cursed beings who lost control of their humanity when they transformed.
Some cultures, however, saw wolf-like shapeshifters in a more neutral or even heroic light. Norse mythology mentions warriors called berserkers, who entered a trance-like state in battle, channelling the spirit of wolves or bears for unmatched ferocity. Similarly, some Native American and Siberian traditions featured shamans who could spiritually or physically transform into wolves.
In modern fantasy, werewolves have taken many forms, from monstrous villains to misunderstood antiheroes. Some common depictions include ordinary humans afflicted with a curse or bitten by another werewolf, thereby doomed to transform under the full moon into uncontrollable, bloodthirsty creatures. Other stories depict werewolves as individuals who can shift between human and wolf-form at will, using their abilities as a gift rather than a curse.
In fantasy, werewolves appear as either noble warriors, wild outcasts, or terrifying predators. They may serve as protectors of nature, defenders of their pack, or uncontrollable forces of destruction.
