All the best with your book!

One question: did you use your own ISBN inside the book? I know they provide a barcode, but a few of the links on their site didn't work, (Publishing basics for one) and I found no information on ISBN. I wasn't able to enter it in the line provided.
Maybe there's another entry at a later point in the process that requests an ISBN?
Great article and best of luck!

I actually used the FeedARead supplied ISBN. This appeared listed in my book details after I had published the book and chosen the option to distribute it to the public. I don't have the ISBN written inside the book as I'd already submitted the manuscript before they supplied the number. They say it isn't a legal requirement to have the ISBN on the copyright page, so the only place it appears on the book is the back cover barcode. The first time I saw the barcode with the ISBN was on the proof copy of the book! (I would have liked to have been issued with the ISBN before manuscript submission so I could include it on the copyright page, but alas it wasn't an option).
I assume you can use your own ISBN - you probably need to email them and request it? It seems strange that they would only allow their own ISBNs.
Sorry I can't help you more with that one. It's a shame FeedARead don't have a better help section set up. I've noticed other writers say they've had a good response from FAR whenever they've emailed a query though. That might be the thing to try.
All the best with your book!!

No need to apologize. I spent a lot of time searching and your post helped quite a bit.
Yep, the ISBN approach is odd, but hey, when in Rome...
:)

Thanks for your great blog.
I'm thinking of using FeedARead but have to give a month's notice to my existing POD publisher. I'm concerned that, should there by a delay, my book will be una..."
Hi Sue,
In my case I had only gotten to the proof copy stage with the first publisher I used. I didn't have to finalise the publication until after i'd seen the proof. So when I wasn't happy with the proof I just didn't submit the book for publication! This isn't an option with FeedARead though, as with them you need to publish the book before they can create and send you a proof copy.
All the best with your book!

just piping in about Feed a Read.
I had concerns in the beginning. Their formatting is a little different than the norm', and yes, there are time frames involved, but the product is GREAT. May sound silly to be so excited about a book, but that's our world. This is what we do.
The books from Feed a Read are hands down much nicer than Create Space.

Definitely not silly to get excited about a book - especially when it's your own! :)
Glad FeedARead worked out well for you too. I'm so happy with the quality of my book.

I was curious if you had any feedback from FeedaRead? Their links don't seem to be working and I read a blog where others were trying to get FaR to respond, but couldn't.
One woman said they might have gone under, taking all royalties with them.
Here's the thread.

I'm not worried about a few royalties, but would really hate it if they had gone under. Have you heard anything?
best,
jw

I haven't heard anything about FAR going under.
They were a few days late with the royalty statement in October, but mine was straightforward and easy to understand when I did get it.
I just ordered some copies of my book last Thursday afternoon and they arrived this morning. I'm still very happy with the quality!
Yes FAR should really offer a better way to contact them. But I've had no problems with them at all (knock on wood!) so I have no complaints. :)
How's your book doing?
Erin

That's great to hear. I really like FAR. I did change the link on my store, though. The pages wouldn't come up. I'll keep a close eye on things and when the links works again, I'll go back to FAR.
Book is doing ok. Slow but steady. Step by step, ya' know?
Thanks for getting back. i really appreciate it.
Hope your book sells wikid-silly this holiday season. :)

Interesting comments. I was testing the upload on FaR this week and struck a problem, there email link on the site didn't work. I found another email and haven't had a reply. I've decided to give them a miss. My business experience has taught me that poor communication and financial reporting will ultimately lead to failure. I think you have to weigh up the pros and cons. If you just want a couple of books printed fine. However if you're going into serious marketing mode then losing 6 months of revenue will be a major setback. I don't think there can be any excuse for holding back royalties for six months. There are thousands of e-commerce programers that can build software for these companies so that the payment flows through weekly or monthly.
On another issue, I've just been quoted publishing in China, 6X9 300 pages, 2000 units @ $1.25 per item all I need now is a drop-shipper. Anyone on the same page?
Cheers Vando

Yeah the six monthly royalty thing is definitely stupid, but right now for me it's just an annoyance rather than a major setback. Maybe FAR will change this at some point in the future.
The reason they gave for the slight delay with the royalty statement last month was due to a change in their reporting system. They were manually checking the reports to ensure it was working properly and this added time to the whole process. I assume from now on the statements will be on time.
It's a real shame that people are having problems with FAR and not getting replies to emails. That's not a good sign. I hope FAR doesn't close up shop!
Erin

It's good to hear you're having a positive experience with FAR as well!
Congrats on writing a sequel! Sorry I don't have an editor/proofreader I can recommend.
All the best with your latest book.
Erin

I'm glad my blog post was helpful. FAR has worked out really well for me, so I'm sure you'll find them fantastic too.
Welcome to the gang! :)
Erin

Thank you for reading my post about FAR - I'm glad it helped give you some peace of mind. I've been with FAR for a year now and I'm still very happy with their service and the quality of books.
I wish you the best of luck with your book!
Erin

I have plenty of experience and prefer to work on fiction. I charge £350 for a ful length MS (PR and CE) plus expenses if you send hard copy (which I prefer) but I can work digitally as well. Contact me here if you are interested.
PS: I am just about to emboark on FAR publishing. Wish me luck!
Julia

Thanks for letting us know that you do proofreading work.
All the best with your book and your journey with FAR!
Erin

Yeah the FAR postage is costly. Not sure why they charge so much! My sales are mostly from online stores including Amazon, but I still have FAR sales too. So for some people the FAR postage hasn't turned them off! :)
I published the Kindle edition directly with Amazon. It's very straightforward and easy to do. Here's the link - https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishin...

Interesting comments - FAR have been great so far, although I've only just moved over to them. They always answer my emails within 48 hours.
I have finished the sequel to my book - can..."
I do reasonably priced proofreading and copy editing. I'm not sure how to make direct contact with you, though.

I must agree with everything you have said about FAR. My first book was published through them which I was over the moon with, my second is on the way to being finished which I will also submit with them.
The only problem I have found is marketing, although my book is on online bookshops over the world you still have to let people know where to find it which I have found a struggle to do on a shoestring budget. I have started a marketing campaign already for the second book as I feel waiting for the book to be published is waiting valuable time. If anybody has any tips it would be a great help.
Mick.

The thing that worries me about FAR is their postage charge for buyers, at £3.65. This seems pretty high to me and, added to the book price, I suspect it would det..."
I have read that it is a good idea to start marketing before the book is online. It all takes such a lot of time, though, when one could/sould be writing.

So many people - readers and Indie bookshop owners - turn their noses up at self published books, expecting them to be poorer quality than 'traditionally published' ones, so the fact that FAR give you a book which (provided you've used a good cover designer) is actually superior in quality to many you'll find in the shops, really helps you sell your book. I noticed that experienced reviewers (magazines and press) who've reviewed my books often make comment about how 'professionally produced' they are. One magazine editor told me that when my book arrived on her desk with a small stack of others from a publishing house, she picked mine up first, because it looked so much better than the others.
First impressions are really important in this game. There are so many rip-off merchants around in the self publishing game, but I have always found I can trust FAR. Check out my cover for 'Running with Crows'here on Goodreads. The colour repro and paper quality is A1.

Also, have you heard of Createspace? Which option is better, FAR or CreateSpace?

Thanks so much for putting it together for us...this has been a turnaround moment for me. Honestly.

I POD with LS and they do all the usual marketing as mentioned in the OP and they have a local office here in Oz.
Do FaR charge to set up your book? LS charge about $85 to set a book up and an annual fee of $13 for the marketing thru B&N, Amazon, Book Depository etc. There is currently an offer with LS that these fees are waived if you sell at least 20 copies a year. If you fail to reach that target, you get invoiced.
The reason I ask all this is that I have just been emailed by FaR even though I've never heard of them and wondered where on earth they got my email address.

I found them patient and helpful when I was struggling, and was thrilled with the quality of the books. By the way, I don't like the comparison - 'good as a bookstore.' Quality varies there too.
I am currently getting a historical novel ready for them. I am a professional editor (content/substantive) working on line and I have recommended FAR to six at least.
Some insisted in going straight to a printer and I don't know that they saved much. I like POD and will use it again.
I also like the encouragement and feedback I have got from the start with FAR. I have got three useful promotions with them, which pushed the book/books straight into their top ten.

FeedARead are good at product, but alas no sales yet.... David Holdsworth author of Angelos: From Whence Come Wars?

However, distribution, apart from getting the Amazon+ Kindle pack, (v. good) - to get the books into bookshops is almost impossible. Waterstones show great resistance, even though I worked for them - they still turn their noses up at POD. They looked at mine, saying, looks great, but when they saw the publisher, didn't stock them. I did book events in indie bookshops selling on average 12-18 books but also sent people to buy the from W'stones, then suddenly they stocked it for a couple of months - so they're quite happy to take the money. Friend of mine won a major prize, hailed as the new John LeCarre etc. with top agent & publisher, sold less than 100 copies and didn't get stocked by Waterstones (1 copy for a few months, then nothing) With Amazon, after the initial selling phase has slowed down they tend to say - not available - or 7 weeks delivery - very off-putting when in fact the book arrives in a week. In my case, the first, THE FOOL'S HOUSE is now showing only as 2nd hand or Kindle. SIMPLE POISON, the second is still available in both new and 2nd hand. I live in Holland and through Amazon my books are also available here, in France and Germany. ...SO, LET'S call them FAR! and get rid of that stupid name.

Thank you for the info. How much do they charge for author copies? Price+delivery? Also are you allowed to buy author copies to be sent directly to other people, e.g. friends, family?
Good luck with your sales.
