Perspective.
Perspective is an interesting phenomenon and its importance was highlighted for me, after watching a short clip, of a magician. He explained how his life had changed after meeting a couple at one of his shows.
Busy and intense on his performance, the magician had failed, when asking the gentleman to pick a card to notice that he was blind. The magician had felt somewhat embarrassed that he could not participate in his trick and he promised the audience member that next time he would have something for him. True to his word, next time he saw the couple at his show, he had a quiet word with the gentleman and then something amazing happened. He picked the couple to help him with a magic trick. Although the gentleman was blind, the magician said sometimes a person can have the ability of guessing correctly whether a card is red or black and asked if he would like to try doing that. The audience was amazed as card after card the gentleman named the colour correctly.
The magician stated that one encounter with the gentleman had helped him not only learn about someone else’s perspective but how profound it was to take that insight and build on it. In his own personal life he took the trouble to be more aware of other people's perspectives and of course in his professional career use perspective to a deeper level. Perspective can enhance perceptability and the magician felt that one of the benefits for him was that he became far more fulfilled, he met a young lady and now is engaged.
Back to the magic trick. The audience's attention had been on the cards and they were not able to see under the table. It was under the table whereby the magician's foot rested on that of the gentleman and he pressed once for black and twice for red.
Understanding perspective can open the door to seeing life in different ways and facilitate communication. Just taking time to put yourself in other people's shoes and their mindset can achieve all sorts of wonders and perhaps cast a different dimension to a relationship, goal or sense of success.
