The morning after a raging college graduation party, we found Lanie Martinlying at the bottom of a ravine, her neck snapped in a fatal fall. And I’m notproud of what came next.
Before we called the police, we covered ourselves. Cleaned up from the blow-outat Ella’s cabin in the Adirondacks the night before. Got our stories straight.
Ella begged me not to tell the police what I saw. She insisted that it was anaccident—and we all went along. What did I know? I was plastered that night, and large chunks of that evening are missing for me.
But now, in my postpartum state, memories are starting to return, and I can’thelp but feel that they might be connected to the soul crushing depression I’vebeen experiencing. Is it guilt? Or do I know more than I think I do?
So when I receive Ella’s invitation for a ten-year reunion at her family camp—agathering of remembrance and healing, she’s calling it—I know I have to go.
Are the memories I’m struggling to recover the key to my moving on? To beingable to take care of my infant son and stay married to the perfect man?
Or are they a death sentence for me, too?

Review: A 10-year college reunion at aremote cabin in the woods to remember the tragic death of a friend. Now, Reaganwas returning with something she knew about that “accidental” death.
In the beginning—before she evengets to the cabin—Reagan gives us the low-down about her post-partum depressionsince having the baby and all her problems before then. It wasn’t exactlyriveting, but it gave us a good look at her life. She doesn’t get to the cabinuntil chapter 6 when it really starts to pick up. The narrative, especially onReagan’s side, can get a little long-winded, making the read feel longer thanit should.
When the old friends start tocongregate and talk, which bring back more memories of that fateful night forReagan, it gets more interesting. Based on the narrative, Ella seems to be theone that wants to keep Lanie’s death buried with something she hoped wouldn’tcome up. But what?
Little by little, we learn moreabout that tragic night. Each new tidbit keeps you immersed, eager to find outmore. It gets even better when one member of the group dies and they all turnon each other. It just makes you keep turning those pages. The conclusion, ofcourse, wasn’t as exciting as I expected it to be, but it ended rather neatly.A good read!
