Inspirations

My first and currently only completed novel, "Occlusion," rooted from a dream I had several months ago. The concepts behind the prologue branched out from the atmosphere and setting of that nightmare. I grew up and out of that setting to form the narrative of my book, changing the details of the dream to allow gateways into the science fiction realm.

The writing process began as a structured synopsis but eventually evolved into an organic monster as I filled in the blanks. The final product ended vastly different from my original plans.

I find it curious how one spark or moment can develop into something. The experience is almost like planting a seed and watching a tree grow, discovering where the branches sprout as time moves by. I often found it a surprise when the story gained a new development, almost as if the book had a mind of its own. It was like watching a television show, except that the destiny of the characters was solely in my hands.

Nothing sprouts from out of nowhere, as even the most outlandish plot can have roots in real world events or inspirations. I'm not in any way saying that I saw any of the events in real life, but somewhere from the perspectives I have lived, these branches found their substance.

A scientist somewhere once said that if you place an apple (or anything, but we will keep it simple) in a box for an infinite amount of time (also placed here for simplicity, but time is another talk altogether), it will eventually live every iteration that its molecules will allow. The universe itself will live and die in that box. Does this theory mean that thoughts can come from nothing, contrary to my previous statement? Maybe.

Maybe uniqueness is both always and never.

A work of art, including a novel, can be about literally anything. How does one break the cookie-cutter mold and knock down the walls of derivative inspiration? A book could be about a different universe altogether, if the author could fathom it and get it on paper.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
