Excerpt from Dreaming with Mugwort

by Heather Sanderson

Dreaming with Mugwort continues to be the top-selling book from Majestic Wisdom Publishing! It was also one of the first books I wrote in the “Dreaming with the Plants” series of books. As my writing has evolved since then, it was time to revisit Mugwort and give the book a bit of a polish. The English edition is now updated and revised with new information!

I wanted to share an excerpt with you here (and plan to share excerpts from all of my books going forward).

From the Introduction to Dreaming with Mugwort:

The first time I heard about Mugwort, I was skeptical. Everything I read indicated that she could enhance psychic abilities and dreams. Perplexed, my brain grappled with this information and tried to figure out how Mugwort could do this. I scanned photos of the plant and wondered if a part of her would pop open to show me the answer. Would her green and silver feathery leaves tell me? Maybe her stem would open and psychic, dream-inducing constituents would walk out and identify themselves. When that didn’t happen, I convinced myself that it wasn’t true.

In denial of my own psychic abilities and gifts, I doubted hers. Envious, I yearned for what she had to offer while simultaneously discounting it. While my eyes squinted, nose turned up with dismissal, my heart ripped open grasping for her magic. I’m not one who usually needs scientific proof, and in this case, my doubt gave me everything I needed.

Since Mugwort has such a strong association with the moon, feminine energy, and the dream world, one of the first things I made was a dream pillow. The instructions indicated that if you are sensitive, avoid putting too much of the plant in the little sachet. Already cloaked in an armor of rational skepticism and doubt, I disregarded this suggestion, took a fistful of her leaves and flowers and tied up my bundle. That night I tucked it under my pillow, closed my eyes, lay my head down, and immediately felt a response.

A pool of energy flooded the back of my neck. My eyes widened as if keeping them open would help me understand what was happening. The tingling sensation moved like wet sand up through the back of my skull, filtered across my crown, and settled in my third eye. The energy was active and activating. My third eye vibrated, expanding and contracting as if on its own. Underused, it felt sludgy and resistant to this sudden nudge, but it was too late to turn back.
