Entangled Updated Version
Most up-to-date version as of June, 3, 2012.
Entangled was never intended to include profanity. I've weeded out everything except for a scene in which Gray, in the guise of Charlene, is joking around with her sister's snotty friend Brittany. The B bombs or whatever you want to call them stay there. That dialogue sounded ridiculous when I tried changing it to "jerk."
Another term that was brought to my attention is slut. I wasn't even aware of using it and had to do a find on the manuscript. Sure enough, there were 6 instances in the text. (One stayed.)
Personally, I'm not fond of the word and would rather say "miniskirt" than "slutty skirt" as I did twice (and now changed). Why does a short skirt need to be slutty?
There's one passage I changed, which I think is actually funnier now. I'll share it on my blog soon with more discussion on this as I think it's an interesting topic.
Also, in a much early version of Entangled that was changed sometime in March, there was a scene where Raj sees Charlene giving Blake a BJ inside his car in the school parking lot. This was changed to the couple making out. Enough people were disturbed by that scene that I tweaked it.
Maybe I need to go back to writing adult romance. LOL!
I am always open to feedback. When readers take the time to bring up questions or concerns, I take the time to listen.
That said (and I mentioned this in an email to the reviewer I was having the slut discussion with) I write for the joy of it and I will not allow people to rob me of that pleasure every time someone takes offense.
If making a change makes sense, I am happy to consider it.
I have updated my goodreads blurbs to include: "This book is intended for older teens." And will do the same on amazon and B&N.
I am also considering changing NetFlix and Kindle to TV and eReader in DUPLICITY after seeing it caused annoyance with a reviewer on goodreads.
I use these terms like I would Kleenex. Didn't even notice, but I'd sooner use something universal.
Now back to working on book three where there are no sluts, no bitches, and no Kindle devices - just good old fashioned magic and romance. ;)
