Jimmy Carter 40 days after death
Today is the 40th day since the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. In many cultures this day prayers and memorial ceremonies are held. The 40th day after the death is significant especially for Catholic and Orthodox Christians, because they believe that the soul of the deceased person finished wandering on earth and finally the ascension occurred.
In Hungary, a Christian country, people also commemorate the 40th day after the death.
President Jimmy Carter left a serious legacy worldwide, including Hungary.
I met him in 1996 while covering how Jimmy Carter arrived in Hungary to help impoverished families get homes. At that time, life in Hungary was very difficult because of the transition from communism to capitalism, which started just a few years before Jimmy Carter arrived. So, he, together with many volunteers build ten homes for poor Hungarians. President Carter personally, with the hammer in his own hands (yes, I saw it), built the small but very cozy houses in Vác, which is about 30 km north of the capital Budapest. It was a "Habitat for Humanity" project, the houses were built fast, one week for ten houses.
I still remember Jimmy Carter's voice and soft smile, and the incredible happiness of people who finally got their own roof above their heads.
Thank you President Jimmy Carter for all the good things you did for people. We remember you in Hungary.
