It seems a lifetime ago when I worked for PEN and we spent 3 days arguing about free speech and a particular writer who’d asked for support… only to put off any conclusion. There will always be some points of view that can’t allow for compromise without negating one’s self. Where there’s a “Yes, but.” And words fall short. We are so much more complex than debates and hot takes. We are stories.
