DIY Book Art

and creative things to do with books. Yes, I see all those old books you have on your shelf over there in the corner. Ahem. Yes, I was talking to myself... ;)

Anyway, being the proud owner of *many* books and very little shelf space, I've had to go on a rampage. Yesterday, the kids and I went to the library and I donated six books to them. Six! After some serious deliberation and staring at my books for about an hour, I finally, finally made my daughter take them to the nice librarian. Who was looking at my stack of books. And licking her chops. And the reason I made my daughter do it is because I'm weak. But I digress. As usual.

I was cruising around Pinterest and found a very cool couple of pictures. Which, happily, actually linked to what the picture was about. *It drives me  crazy when these pictures don't link to the proper sites. Seriously not cool, people. (By the way, you can follow my boards here if you want to. Shameless plug out of the way.)

- There was a book igloo - don't think hubster will want this sitting in the livingroom, but I plan on trying

- A table runner with a decorative edge cut into the page edges

- A receipt book

- Origami bookmarks (I've made some super cute ones, see the picture below for a link to the tutorial!)

- Envelopes

- A Fall Wreath

- Recycled Scrapbook

and my favorite that I'm going to try today...

- A Pumpkin!

As you may or may not know, I'm an author. And being an author, I have some books that I wouldn't be able to sell. They're either proof copies (where I re-read the book and nit pick it to death and find all the mistakes. Well, I try anyway...) or they were damaged in transit from my publisher. (I'm very nice to the UPS man, so I really don't know why he takes things out on my stuff. Just because he has to deliver stuff to me quite often, doesn't mean he should be ornery!) ;) Here are a few things I've made with my own books:

paper beads,

- I've made a business card holder (You'll have to excuse the picture. I'm a writer, not a photographer)

- business card flowers (because I love bling)

- Origami Bookmarks (trust me. Little paper bulldogs are the bomb)

- and I've even made my own paper (Didn't take a picture of this one, but I'm sure you can use your imagination. I mean, hey. It's paper, right?)

I bet you can't tell I was raised with the 'use it up before you throw it out' mentality...

Karen Do not have a link because I never pinned the altered book idea and actually just perused and did my own thing.I hate when they do not link to directions either. I saw the igloo also on Pinterest. No room for it. I have quite a few projects pinned and want to do some. I am exactly like you : I would not do well giving the books to library either. I did do an altered book a few weeks back with an old hard back I read twice. Love it. I have always wanted to do one ,but was intimidated. I just jumped in and did it. The only thing is spaces to put all my home made treasures in. Do not have a link because I never pinned the altered book idea and actually just perused and did my own thing.

Karen Oh and I really want to do the paper beads. Trying to get daughters enthused. Exciting to me. they just sound annoyed at the suggestion.

Amanda Stephan Argh, it sounds wonderful! Ah well, I totally understand about not having a link. There's a ton of things I do that I don't have links to. I'm so glad you jumped in and just let your creativity flow, though. That's awesome! And, I haven't been able to talk my hubby into letting me tear apart the house to build a book igloo yet. ;)

The paper beads are really neat, but they can get messy. My daughter is the same. I tried to teach both my children how to do origami, and she looked at me and quite politely told me 'it takes a special person to be good at paper folding. Mom, I'm not one of those people.' It was so funny. Maybe when they see you doing it, they'll be more interested.

Barina Not ours, but this home bar built from books fits right in with some of these other projects.

Amanda Stephan Barina, that is just awesome. Seriously, I think I'm going to try to convince hubby that I need something like that! In fact, there's a new bookstore in town that actually has one similar to this. Thanks for sharing! :)

I love it, but I would have to be the one that does it. Husband has no incentive to do anything.
