Oozing of Onslaughttitude: I Guess I Shouldn't Be Surprised
…by the ignorant, bigoted comments about this Alan Scott outing. I get that some people have objections for other reasons, but many are just plain obnoxiously homophobic.
I read worse, meaner ones…but this one really got to me, for some reason. From…
“Gay bandwagon,” my ass. I am so sick of hearing that.
First, three new characters at three different companies is a TRICKLE, not a bandwagon. We are all still so far behind on lgbtq portrayal that ANY movement forward is important, as long as it is done well. This is the same goofy thinking that objects when JLA has two black members, as ‘forced diversity.’ It’s bullshit. I don’t even want to bother addressing this stuff, but it keeps coming up. It’s embarrassing.
I wish there WAS a bandwagon. But there isn’t.
Second, this was the writer’s idea. He saw that the new continuity meant a loss of a prominent DC gay male character he really liked, Obsidian. And he felt that redressing that was important. This is one way to do that. There are objections for other reasons, if you like, sure. But that was why it happened. It was not a corporate or marketing decision.
AND I remind everyone that this isn’t the first long-standing character that the writer has outed. He did it brilliantly years ago with STARMAN, one of the best titles DC has ever produced.
The problem with the recent DC and Marvel stuff is not that it exists, it’s that it’s late in coming and there’s not ENOUGH.
But change is coming, it’s inevitable. And that’s a good thing.
