Entertaining Summer Choices

Last week, with the onset of summer vacation, I made a trip to the library. My trip was actually two-fold since I had to switch out the children's display case, but I also wanted to check out some great summer books for Emily that would provide her with different forms of entertainment. I brought home four books that day.

The first two books I brought home were I Can Make Music by Michael Purton and Make Your Own Musical Instruments by Anna-Marie D'Cruz. Although we have yet to try any of the ideas in these two books, I thought they would provide some interesting projects for the summer months. When I looked up the second book online at Amazon, I found that Miss D'Cruz has a whole line of "Make Your Own" books. There was a Make Your Own Puppets, a Make Your Own Slippers and Shoes, a Make Your Own Purses and Bags, a Make Your Own Masks, and a Make Your Own Books book. That is quite a selection and would probably keep any family in projects for an entire summer vacation. I know I am looking forward to creating some instruments!

The other two books that I brought home were Simple Steps to Drawing - All Around Town by the GarethStevens Publishing Company and How to Draw Sea Creatures by Barbara Soloff-Levy. Since Emily was old enough to hold a pencil in her hand she has been drawing, so it was no surprise to me at all that she immediately began to work with the drawing books. At first she tried drawing sea creatures but they seemed a little complicated so she moved onto drawing items from the All Around Town book. She actually drew a really nice fish stand, a tractor, and a dog. Later she did go back and work on sea creatures and became quite proficient at drawing blue whales, sword fish, star fish, and clams. When these books are due back to the library I think we will see what other entertaining books we can find. I can safely say at least a few of them will probably be additional drawing books, but that's okay because we have lots of scrap paper!

So ends another episode of Kids Korner with me, Children's Author Aileen Stewart. Join me next week for another exciting episode same krazy time, same krazy channel.
