Little Spheres – A Gentle Reminder I Needed to Hear
I was feeling a little low yesterday. Not having achieved this or that, wishing for more, wanting …wondering why I was feeling the way I was. I decided to pray, to share how I was feeling with the Spirit of Love, because if you can’t talk to the One who loves you when you’re feeling blue, it’s not much of a relationship, now is it?
I went on for a while, moaning about this, whining about that. Then, in an attempt to right myself, I started listing the things in my life I’m thankful for, the blessings I appreciate and enjoy each day, and it was THEN that this thought occurred to me. A quote from one of my favourite books, by one of my favourite authors (A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens)
“I never knew that any Christian spirit working kindly in its little sphere, whatever it may be, will find its mortal life too short for its vast means of usefulness.”
It was then I realized the error of my thinking. No, I may not sell as many books as J.K. Rowling or Brandon Sanderson. I may not touch as many lives as Oprah, Graham Norton, or Denzel Washington. But those who have read my books have told me how they touched them. My neighbors speak kindly of me and call me the “Kind Woman”. I feed the birds and squirrels, and I care for stray kitties when no one else will. I make a small, gentle impact, working kindly in my little sphere.
Yesterday, I felt low, defeated, and purposeless, but I learned several very important things through that feeling.
1- Feeling low is ok. It reminds us to refocus on what truly matters.
2- When we pray, it’s ok to share how you’re feeling. Love listens and understands, but it’s equally important not to stay in that place of negativity. By shifting your focus to something for which you’re grateful, you open yourself to learning; you allow the answers you’re looking for to come through. (negativity repels. Positivity attracts.)
3- We don’t have to be superstars to be superstars. Be Kind. Be Present. Be Compassionate. If we all ‘work in our little spheres’ the world will overflow.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. YOU are a blessing to me.
