DID YOU KNOW THAT:
Alaska was obtained and lost by two Russian Emperors.
Peter the Great, one month before his death in 1725 ordered his Russian Navy officer Vitus Bering to find out where ends Siberia. And after many difficulties in 1741 Bering found and colonized Alaska for the Russian Empire.
But in 1867, Alexander II sold Alaska to the United States of America because it was a burden to keep. The profits of Alaska's main commodity the wild animals’ furs sharply declined and Russia still felt the pain of the Crimean War, which was finished a decade ago.
Emperor Alexander II sold “this frozen land” for just $7.2 million before any gold, silver, gas, and oil were discovered in Alaska.
One year ago, on January 18 2024 Russian President Vladimir Putin allocated money for searching and protecting real estates abroad from the times of the Russian Empire. The decree in Russian is here:
