Geek of the Week: Artist Damien Lasaration
Welcome to Geek of the Week! This week’s interview is with Australian artist Damien Lasaration. Damien did two cool comic book covers based on a couple of my cosplay photos, shown below.
Interview with Damien LasarationI see you are located in Australia! Are you involved in any comic con type conventions there?I try to go to the main 2 that are in NSW that are Supanova and OZCC. I just go as a cosplayer and will sometimes look to getting a good deal on slabbed comics as I am a collector. I also do my Christmas shopping here as there are some great stalls and the bootleg t-shirts are second to none!
Tell us a little about your art and your process:I did my first art exhibition at 18 in a small cafe in Newtown just after I left high school. I have always been putting pen to paper and if there is an idea then its either put down on paper in either poetry or song or down as a preliminary sketch then extend from there once I am in the studio.
I can do graffiti art, animation (I have done some short films) to abstract and portraits. Acrylics are great as they clean up easier than most mediums once applied by mistake. I can mix different layers into my work.
Mixed media is a lot of fun to do, and I learned this by watching the masters in documentaries such as Comic Book Confidential to make the work something that has never been seen before, and that is the trick to making art as you want to create something which is unique.
Do you do Instagram live for all your comic book cover art?I do live drawing if it can be completed within the 58 minutes I am allotted, so I used that as a challenge. It’s painting by the gun, and it makes the art dangerous and that is what is needed in art.
You want it exciting, so it brings risk and spontaneity into the process as appose to just watching paint dry.

How do you choose your subjects? Do you take cosplayer requests? If I feel someone has that X-Factor I will try to get them on the page and if someone likes what I do, and we agree to what can be done on paper sure I can take requests!

If you sell your art, where can people purchase it?I sell prints and t-shirts and pencil cases and stuff like that on my Red Bubble store. Link is in the bio on my Instagram or just look up Lasaration in Red Bubble. Click here to visit the store
Anything else you would like to mention?I also play guitar really badly but maybe that is not worth mentioning! A mix between dada, which I incorporate in my art. This was a movement within the Surrealists back in the 20’s last century. Sometimes I just like to strum chords and mix it up with noise ala Velvet Underground.

Thank you to Damien for answering my questions! And if you would like to see more of his art, be sure to visit his Instagram page or Red Bubble store.
