Does a Period Mean It’s the End?

I want to write a sentence with no end. This, however, is impossible because eventually I will run smack into a full dot stop. The period. But I have always wondered: why? Why must we put an end to a thought that is so clearly connected to the next? Why must any punctuation, save for the lovely comma, cause a stop when in my head none exists?
