Partial recount in Georgia after international criticism

There was criticism both in Georgia and in the West after the Georgian Dream party won the election. The party, which seeks rapprochement with Russia, received 54 percent of the vote, according to official results. The pro-European opposition and the president of the country in the Caucasus believe that this has been manipulated. Thousands of Georgians took to the streets of the capital Tbilisi on Monday evening to demonstrate.

The demonstration in the capital passed peacefully. President Salome Zurabishvili told voters outside the parliament building that their votes had been “stolen”. Georgian Dream reacted with irritation to such claims. The speaker of the parliament defended the result and accused Zurabishvili of spreading “disinformation” to destabilize the country.
