The Tet Offensive

On January 30 1968 the Viet Cong  and North Vietnamese Army launched a coordinated surprise attack against the forces of the South Vietnamese Army, United States Armed Forces and their allies.

The name TET is a truncated version of the Lunar New Year festival Tết Nguyên Đán.  The purpose of the wide-scale offensive was to trigger political instability in a belief that mass armed assault on urban centers would trigger defections and rebellions in South Vietnam.
