At least seven people died when a pier collapsed on Sapelo Island in the US state of Georgia. According to Reuters, the circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown.

It happened on Saturday afternoon local time collapse of a pier off the coast of Sapelo Island in the US state of Georgia.
“At least twenty people fell into the water as a result of the footbridge collapsing. Right now the death toll is seven and the number of injured is not yet known– they said in a press release local authorities.
U.S. Coast Guard helicopters and boats equipped with sonar began immediately search and rescue operation.
Most people who visited the island on Saturday participated inannual festival on Culture Day celebrating the heritage of the Gullah Geechee people, whose representatives live in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Sapelo Island can only be reached by boat or ferry. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes.
