AfD man resigns over Weidel: ‘Every party gets the politicians it deserves’

The AfD’s transport policy spokesman in the Bundestag, Dirk Spaniel, wants to leave the AfD after Alice Weidel was appointed as first candidate. He told news portal T Online on Saturday evening in Ulm after the AfD party meeting in Baden-Württemberg for the 2025 federal elections.

“Every party gets the politicians it deserves,” Spaniel told T Online. “I am relieved that I no longer have to accept internal party grievances against me for partisan reasons. The AfD should go down this path. It will not be mine for long.”

Spaniel is a bitter and long-standing opponent of AfD leader Alice Weidel in the Baden-Württemberg regional federation. Weidel was voted No. 1 on the state list for the federal election in Ulm with 86.5 percent approval. Many of their supporters secured promising positions on the list. On the other hand, the Spaniel failed in its claim for fifth place on the list with only 26.9 percent approval.
