Michel Barnier wants to find a new balance and will go to the island “when the time comes”

Senate and Assembly, a common mission

“We will take the time, at least for a year, to discuss the matter again and find a new balance. We can rebuild the dialogue between all the communities,” he said, recalling that the President of the National Assembly, Yael Braun-Bivet, and her counterpart in the Senate, Gérard Larcher, will carry out a mission of good offices in the archipelago.

He added: “I will go to New Caledonia myself when the time comes because I believe this is the responsibility of the Prime Minister.”

Economic damage

The electoral reform project, led by Emmanuel Macron and Gérald Darmanin, sparked the worst riots in 40 years in New Caledonia starting in May, killing 13 people, including two gendarmes. We should also regret the enormous economic damage it has suffered.

It was about expanding the electoral college – frozen since 2007 – for provincial elections to include residents of the archipelago for 10 years, which, according to separatists, threatens to marginalize the indigenous Kanak people.
