“It’s a relief, we’ve been heard,” said George Ozette, Delo’s plant manager, beaming.
Pollution and reputationFounded in 1999 by former Guyanese international footballer Bernard Lama, the company, which employs 19 people, was concerned about the ISDND project being located 4.5 km from its pumping site. In addition to potential contamination, management feared such proximity would damage Delo’s image. “If there is even the slightest doubt about the quality of our products, their value collapses,” Mr. Uset worried in June 2023.
According to the plenary report, opposition from industrialists and the lack of amendment to the Regional Development Plan by the Regional Group of Guyana (CTG), defeated the project which was scheduled to absorb 70,000 tonnes of waste annually.
“It’s a waste of time,” said Kenny Chen Tong, vice chairman of CACL’s environmental waste committee. For him, “CTG is overdue.”
Pressure for timeBut elected officials are in a hurry because the current ICD is saturated. On its website, CACL states that the installation “will have to close in 2025.” In the face of accumulated delays, the storage capacity has been adapted to be able to operate until 2027.
The new site project goes hand in hand with an energy recovery unit that will reduce the volume of waste while producing energy.
