The People of the Raven – Building #Fantasy #Characters and #Realms
Inspired by the artwork of Valentina Remenar, I created a collection of characters and stories for a brand new tribe of Feyfolk for my dark fantasy, Dark Fey, which will be re-published early in 2025.
The People of the Raven are a mysterious, nearly forgotten race of Feyfolk; their existence is whispered about in the southern lands of Jyndari but scarcely believed. They dwell in the remote, windswept expanses of Vrynnyth Gahl, the Northern Territories, where the land is as wild and untamed as its inhabitants. Rugged mountains blanketed in mist rise like sentinels, their jagged peaks piercing the sky. Ancient forests cling to the hillsides, their dense canopies filled with the whispers of the wind, while deep valleys cradle dark, pristine lakes reflecting the hues of the ever-changing sky. The land feels alive, imbued with a potent magic that hums through the air as if Vrynnyth Gahl itself breathes with the rhythm of the Feyfolk who call it home.
The People of the Raven, with their great wings that span the length of their bodies, live as one with this harsh yet breathtaking land. Their feathers, typically black as the night sky with hints of silver and gold, mark them as the chosen guardians of the ancient magic that courses through Vrynnyth Gahl. Each member of their tribe possesses an array of remarkable gifts passed down through generations, and this is the legacy of their deep connection to the land and the creatures that share it. Chief among their abilities is Spirit Walking, a sacred skill allowing them to see through the eyes of their bonded ravens, soaring high above the mist-clad mountains or gliding through shadowed forests. Through this bond, they are never truly alone, and the ravens of Vrynnyth Gahl serve as their eyes, ears, and sometimes even their voice.
Telepathy is another hallmark of their race, enabling them to communicate without speaking, their thoughts woven together in intricate threads. They are deeply attuned to the emotions and inner thoughts of others, using empathic healing to mend both body and soul. They also use mental discernment to understand a person as if peering into their very essence. Some of the tribe have innate dreamwalking abilities that allow them to traverse the realm of sleep, guiding or protecting others as they navigate the dream world. Rarely, among the most gifted, some possess the ability to shapeshift, merging fully with their raven counterparts or even taking the form of other creatures.
These abilities, however, are not merely powers but sacred responsibilities. The People of the Raven are not conquerors or rulers, but guardians, protectors of Vrynnyth Gahl’s ancient magic and secrets. Hidden away in the remote heights of their homeland, they keep their distance from the broader world, content to let the myths of their existence remain just that — myths.
