How the W Hotels “What She Said” Initiative is Driving Progress in Gender Equality
Modern-day women are fighting to have their voices heard. We are collectively pushing back on gender inequality and letting society know “This is not okay.” When the opportunity arises to speak up against the unfairness and disadvantages we face daily, women have stepped up to the podium. We’re now taking our power back, beginning with breaking the silence but having supportive allies across different industries is also key to achieving the necessary gender balance.
In 2016, W Hotels took a step forward to encourage women to speak up. The world-renowned brand created the What She Said initiative to praise womanhood and help raise their voices. The platform organizes several well-attended events throughout the year. You can always count on influential speakers to stimulate and inspire conversations that encourage, educate, and spread awareness about the progress in the gender equality movement. In the past, panels have included pop culture icons like Diane von Furstenberg, Ava Duvernay, LeToya Luckett, Rachel Zoe, Cheryl Hines, and Jenna Lyons. W Hotels aims to cultivate community and deliver engaging conversations about equality issues we are tackling today.
On September 5th, AW attended the What She Said event at the W New York – Times Square hosted by Fashion Week Haus. The space was filled with inspiration and provocative dialogue. Amazing women from near and far, connected and empowered one another. The night’s agenda included a VIP PRE-Party with a pop-up store, a special bourbon experience by Angels Envy, and a panel discussion with Media Personality & Speaker, Daisy Kent – Author, Activist, & Bachelor Contestant, Farai Simoyi – Netflix Next in Fashion Star & Owner of Narativ, and Elizabeth Weber – Love Island & Owner the Content Club. The women on the stage shared a piece of their journey, as they figured out the path to their dreams. The night closed with a fabulous fashion show from The NARATIV HOUSE.
As I looked around the room, it was evident that many wonderful conversations were being had throughout the space. The greatest takeaway for me was the energy of the night. I walked away re-invigorated and ready to walk into a new level of my dreams. I am grateful to the W Hotel for creating these fantastic spaces and hospitality and to all the women present who were open to genuine connection.
