Greek hotels can’t keep up with Airbnb. The number of holiday apartments is growing rapidly

In the years 2014-2023, the number of beds in short-term rental facilities in Greek Attica increased by 751 percent, while the number of hotel beds increased by only 16 percent – ​​calculated by the Institute for Tourism Research and Forecasting (ITEP) based on data from AirDNA – a provider of data and analytics for the short-term rental sector. In 2014, there were 16,083 beds in Attica in 4,049 “Airbnb-type” accommodations, by the end of 2023 these numbers had increased to 136,813 and 34,037 respectively.

In turn, the number of hotel beds was 58,197 and hotel beds 644, and a decade later it increased to 67,398 and 698, respectively.

This means that the capacity of holiday apartments in Attica grew at an average annual rate of 24 percent, while hotel capacity grew by just 1 percent.

In 2014, there were 2,209 vacation rentals in Athens, with a total of 7,809 beds. In 2023, 18,454 such establishments offered 67,953 beds for rent.
