Author’s Note: While this article is mainly spoiler-free, it may contain minor spoilers for Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez.
Abby Jimenez’s Just for the Summer will be one of my top reads of 2024 and maybe my top romance read of the year. I loved this one. This is the second book in this shared world that I have read and they keep getting better. I still need to read Part of Your World.
I want to make it clear that even though this is part of a shared world, you do not need to read Part of Your World and Yours Truly to understand what is happening. Characters from the other books (I can’t speak for Part of Your World) do make appearances, but it does not impact the understanding and enjoyment of Just for the Summer.
Just for the Summer follows Emma who is cursed. Everyone she dates ends up finding their true love after they break up. She’s annoyed and over it. She wants to have the romance that everyone does. That is until she finds someone with the same issue as she has. Enter Justin and his viral Reddit thread. He has been deemed a good luck charm for other couples. The same thing that happens to Emma also happens to him. She DMs him and tells her of his problem. The two believe that if they date each other, then one of their curses will be broken, and the next person they date will be their soulmate. It’s worth a shot. The only thing is that they aren’t even close to each other. This is a problem that Emma can solve. She and her best friend, Mady, are travel nurses. They take a position near Justin so they can date. It starts great until Emma’s wayward mother arrives and turns her world upside down.
Abby Jimenez is an author who has quietly won me over. There’s something about her books that draws me in and makes them impossible to put down. I cannot speak for all her books since this is only the second one, I've read, but she creates real characters and highlights the simple aspects of life. She takes ordinary lives and gives them a magical touch. It’s not always sweet and fluffy, but it reminds you that even when things are bad, there’s still a lot of good in the world.
On the surface, Just for the Summer seems like a cute summer romance story. I didn’t expect it to tackle some of the serious issues that it did, but I should have known better—Yours Truly did the same thing. What I love about Abby’s approach is how she incorporates trauma and the more serious aspects of life in a way that feels like a natural part of the story. It doesn’t feel like a platform or a token sob story. These issues are a part of the characters but do not define them. We see their strengths and qualities, but we also see how these past or present events have affected them. I wouldn’t say that these events made them who they are because they are more than just their trauma.
Emma is an example of this. I loved her a lot. She is a travel nurse, who appears to have everything put together. She and her best friend Mady, who is also a travel nurse, pick where they want to work. They take turns picking. This time it was supposed to be Mady’s pick and they were going to Hawaii, but then Justin entered the picture. Emma wants to go, so Mady gives up her pick. I love the friendship these two have. They have been through a lot together. Mady’s moms ended up raising Emma as a foster child and this has made them more than friends. Mady is there for Emma and Emma is for Mady. They will do anything for each other. It shows a lot in this book because there are things in this book that are not easy.
Emma’s mother, Amber, has been in her life and it’s not always a good thing. However, she is the only blood family that Emma has. Amber struggles with mental illness and other things. When Emma was a child, she would just pack up and leave Emma to fend for herself. This is how Emma ended up in the system, to begin with. Emma has spent her whole life wanting her mother and caring for her. She was robbed of her childhood. Emma thinks that everything is fine and this has had no impact on her. Mady sees otherwise and tries to protect Emma from her mother. She warns Emma of what is going to happen now that Amber is back. Amber has this record of ruining anything good that Emma has going for her and leaving Emma to pick up the pieces. She does this every time and it is taking a toll on Emma.
Have a great day!
