A Table for Every Nation
There are several parrallels between the Old Testament Passover and the New Testament Table of our Lord. In both, the lamb is slain. In both, the blood delivers. In both, the meal nourishes. But there are differences as well. At Passover, the people of God were surrounded by the unbelieving Egyptians. They were on the run and death was on the offensive. But in the supper of our Lord, these are reversed. This is a new covenant meal, in which the Spirit has been poured out on the new covenant church. The Spirit of life is on the offensive and as the once for all death is proclaimed, death itself has to head for the hills.
Rather than retreating from a rebellious nation, this table marks an assault on all of those rebellious nations. Every nation, tribe, and tongue hears the call to come and welcome to Jesus Christ. And every nation, tribe, and tongue will heed that call.
It is particularly important to remember this truth when things are falling apart and the things that can be shaken are indeed being shaken. Christ said that the He was the bread of God, which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. This true bread, which feeds us, will feed the entire world. To come partake of this bread now is to partake of that particular promise. All nations will stream to this table. And there will be a seat found around it for each and every one of them.
In keeping with this promise, this table, which was first established on the other side of the world, has made its way around the globe to us. So come knowing that the ends of the earth will taste and see that He is good. So come in faith and welcome to Jesus Christ.
