God did not create a homeless Adam on the first day of creation and then build him a house in which to dwell. He built a habitation for Adam first and then created Adam within it. He does something similar for every human, fashioning us in the premade home of our mother’s womb. This is a grace. But for the Christian’s children, there is a double grace. Such little ones are not only born in an architected world. They are born into the kingdom of God, into the house of God. They are knit together in God’s covenant love and bond, with the promise of eternal and abundant life guaranteed to them by the blood of Christ. Baptism is a sign and seal of this covenant which is all of grace and kept by faith.
