The last Schubert on Sunday post — over six months ago, how did that happen? — was a wonderful video recording of Julian Prégardien singing Die Schöne Mullerin, accompanied by the fortepianist Els Biesemans. Prégardien has now just released a CD of the same cycle, this time with the fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout. This is quite remarkable too, as Bezuidenhout brings out all the colour-range of his Graf-style instrument: but there is still something quite especially moving about the filmed live recording before a small audience, with Els Biesemans herself obviously so intensely wrapped up in the music as the cycle reaches it end.
Of Schubert’s late quartets, the Rosamunde D. 804 is about my favourite — except, of course, on the days when it is Death and the Maiden or the great G major quartet! Anyway, here are the Elias Quartet, rightly Wigmore Hall favourites, in an elegiac performance.
