Rereading: THE DAYBREAKERS by Jane Louise Curry

The third book in Curry’s Abaloc series is again ambitious and complicated. It takes place in a West Virginia mill town, where Callie and Henry and their parents live in the poor part of town. Their father has a good job at the mill, and Callie is friends with Liss from the rich part of town. Callie likes to explore “The Ridge,” a high hill between her house and Liss’s, and one day she and Liss find an opening into an ancient burial mound full of artifacts. One of those artifacts transports them back in time hundreds of years to a settlement of Abaloc people, and Callie’s brother Harry is brought with them. Soon the three children become pawns in a power struggle between the peaceful Abalocs and warlike sun-worshippers from further south who are taking over the area. Several trips back in time by the children and their friends allow them to try to save the Abalocs from their enemies, but what will happen when they return home?

Curry’s ambition makes for too many complications, and having Callie and Harry be African-American with lots of slang and cultural differences also complicates the story. By the end I was kind of tired of it, but there are some interesting ideas and exciting adventures here. Mildly recommended.
