Saturday Snippet: "Surely, it cannot be me."

 Today's snippet is taken from

A Watchman for Willow

Mail-Order Papa series

Holding Ila Maewhile the child made a second attempt to get the rest of her supper into hermouth, Willow reached her free hand for the paper. She brought it closer to herface to read the advertisement Dorothy pointed toward with a tapping fingertip.“It says here the job offer is for a city night watchman. I’ve heard of nightwatchmen in the cities in the East, but I thought the keepers of the law outhere were usually sheriffs and marshals.” She raised her gaze to meetDorothy’s. “Besides, what does that have to do with me?”

“We have SheriffMcQuade, but he and his deputies serve the entire county, not local issueswithin Sonora. We also have a constable, who works in the daytime. That’s notthe part that involves a widow with a young child. Keep reading.”

Willow’s lips movedas she started at the top and read the advertisement. Then she reached the lastsentence and sucked in her breath. “…Applicant must be a suitable candidate asa husband for a young widow with a single child and be willing to considermarriage to same.” She gasped as she turned to Dorothy. “Do you honestly thinkthat refers to me?”

“It could.” Dorothyshrugged. “You do fit the description. Like I said, I overheard some men whoexpressed resentment they would not be considered for the job because they werealready married. Others complained they might be single and interested in thejob, but they did not think it fair that it be tied to marrying a widow.”

“But, surely, itcannot be me. I never agreed to anything like this.” Willow returned her gazeto the advertisement and reread it. “Maybe…maybe there is another widow with achild who did agree to marrying whomever the city hired as the night watchman, and that is who the city has in mind.”
