A navy and gold book entitled 'Song of the Stag' is held up in front of an oil on canvas painting of a Scottish deerALT

I was extremely insufferable in Edinburgh yesterday and took photos of Song of the Stag at every landmark that even so much as reminded me of something in the book.

I’m planning to start a little SotS tours Edinburgh series but first, the absolutely stunning Monarch of the Glen by Edwin Landseer 😍 It was painted for the palace of Westminster and perfectly encapsulates the Victorian ideal of a biscuit-tin-lid Scotland, with majestic glens and the romanticisation of a Highlands that had faced hardship after hardship at the hands of imperialism.

To me, the painting has always been a bit of a personal symbol for the book, given its history, symbolism and aesthetic. Plus, it makes a banging playlist cover!
