Saturday Snippet: I must use all the tools at my disposal

For those who love "Christmas in July" books,
today's snippet is taken from

Marigold

Christmas Quilt Brides series

…I’m surprised you put locks onyour carriage house and where you live.” George removed the nosebag from hisbuckskin and closed the door behind him. He offered his elbow. “Most people arepretty honest. I know very few people who bother to lock their doors.”

“That might be true in the country, but not in town. I gotinto the habit of locking my place when I lived in Cutler. Especially once theschool board made an issue of wanting me to move out sooner than my contractrequired, I put a lock on the door and gave Rose strict instructions not toleave the house unless the windows were securely closed and the door locked. Ididn’t want anyone to come inside during our absence and move our thingsoutside.”

“For some reason, Mari, I cannot picture you giving anyoneinstructions unless you do so in a strict manner.” A teasing tone to his voice,George bent forward and turned to face Marigold.

Marigold lifted her chin and jerked her face until her gazemet George’s. “Sometimes, one must do what one must do. I quickly discovered,if I wished to be taken seriously, I must use all the tools at my disposal. Iam not the tallest of women. Even Rose is taller than I am. Therefore, I mustimpress upon people that I am determined. Otherwise, there are those who willuse their greater height and girth to try to walk all over me.” She continuedto hold his gaze as he seemed to study her face.
