In the past few weeks, we have heard some sad news from church leadership. In Missouri, a pastor stepped down after several allegations of inappropriate touching surfaced. And in Texas, nationally known pastor Robert Morris stepped down from Gateway Church after an Oklahoma woman accused him of molesting her.
It’s certainly not the first time we’ve heard about scandals. In the 1980s, Jimmy Swaggert broke down in tears after being entangled with a prostitute. Later in that decade, Jim Bakker was accused of sexual misconduct by church secretary Jessica Hahn. Earlier in the 70s, the megachurch couple Jim and Tammy Faye, faced accusations about personals use of church funds.
It hurts the body of the church when our leaders succumb to moral failings. Of course, cheating on your spouse or misusing funds is bad enough, but preying on our young people is a sin and a crime.
