Nature Insight: A View of Solitude

Nature Insight was a regular feature of my blog in the early days. For years, novel writing has monopolized my creative and literary energy, but finally I have a poem to offer. Hope you enjoy it.

My view is colored with birds, come May,
those who return and those who stay,
feathered flowering upon the wing,
lifting cloud curtains as they sing.

Cardinal, redder than in the snow,
courts a lady to be her beau,
their sweet whistling is also wooing
early morn to wake doves’ cooing.

Grosbeak pairs black caped and rose-breasted,
plainly brown, bravely high-nested,
are boldly back devouring seed,
and whatever fills hunger’s need.

Orioles arrive dressed as last seen,
under a spell from Halloween,
with or without tricks, enjoying treats
oranges, and grape jelly completes.

Woodpeckers, downy and red-bellied
hang, climb, and might try fruit jellied.
Hummingbirds soon perch to rest their wings
and for the drink my welcome brings.

Blushing finches, canary ones, too,
flit feeder’s to feeder’s menu.
Jays make an entrance large and loudly,
flaunting their need to pose proudly.

Even birds wearing brown, black, and gray,
help to purposely paint the day:
nuthatches, chickadees, titmouses,
scolding wrens looking for houses.

Catbird meowing from an oak tree
one more blessing to uplift me
when pure nature gives my solitude
the company of gratitude.
