How School Failed My Child: A Counsellor’s Reflection

Today, I want to share a story, not from my confidential files but from a personal chapter of my life. It’s a story about my child, a bright spark dimmed by the shadows of a system that couldn’t cater to his unique light.

The Promise of Education

When my child first stepped into school, it was with a heart full of dreams and a backpack brimming with crayons and curiosity. The school promised a world of knowledge, friendships, and growth. But as the years trickled by, I noticed the colours fading from his artwork, his enthusiasm for stories waning, and dullness in his once-sparkling eyes.

The Square Peg and the Round Hole

My child, like many others, didn’t fit the conventional mould. He was a square peg being forced into a round hole, his edges chafing and his spirit wilting. The school’s rigid curriculum, standardized tests, and one-size-fits-all approach left little room for creativity, individuality, or emotional literacy.

The Invisible Backpack

Every child carries an invisible backpack filled with experiences, emotions, and unique ways of seeing the world. My child’s backpack was heavy with creativity and empathy, but the school’s scales only measured academic achievements and athletic prowess. The teachers, burdened with their own loads, often failed to see the weight my child bore.

The Echo of Silence

I remember the parent-teacher meetings, sitting across from educators as they shuffled papers and spoke in coded language about “potential” and “distractions.” My input as a parent and a professional seemed to echo in a void, unheard and unheeded. The system was a monologue, not a dialogue, and my child’s voice was lost in the silence.

The Lesson in Failure

It took a while for me to realize that the school had failed my child, not the other way around. The failure was not in the grades or missed assignments but in the inability to nurture a child’s innate potential. The true lesson was in understanding that sometimes, the learning path is not through textbooks and tests but through heart-to-heart connections and recognizing the individual in every student.

A New Chapter

Today, my child is in another school, learning through nature’s rhythms, people’s stories, and the freedom to explore. The colours have returned to his artwork, and his stories are filled with the adventures of a curious mind set free. As a counsellor, I’ve learned that sometimes, the best way to support a child is to step outside the conventional and embrace the unique journey of each soul.

This story is not just mine; it echoes in the lives of many families. As a society, we must ask ourselves: Are we creating environments where every child can thrive? Are we listening to the silent pleas for understanding and support? It’s time for a change, a time to redefine success and education for the sake of every child who carries an invisible backpack, hoping to be seen.

Journeying through the intricate landscapes of mental well-being and learning, we must hold onto the belief that each child harbours a cosmos of potential. It’s our collective responsibility to ensure that no child feels like a square peg in a round hole and that every child’s backpack is light enough to carry with joy.
