"The Destroyer #98 - Target of Opportunity"
Just finished listening to "The Destroyer #98 - Target of Opportunity" released by GraphicAudio.
The Destroyer series was created by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir back 1963, with the first book in the series being published in 1971.
Remo Williams, a Newark cop framed for a crime and sentenced to death. His death is faked by the government so he can be trained as an assassin for CURE, a secret organization set up by President Kennedy to defend the country by working outside the law. The head of CURE is Harold W. Smith, a man selected by the President not only for his brilliant mind but also because of his integrity. Smith is a former law instructor at Yale and served in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II.
Remo's trainer and father figure is Chiun, a deadly assassin and the last Master of Sinanju. It has also emerged that Remo is the Avatar of Shiva, as prophesied in the legends of Sinanju.
Will Murray, who is best known perhaps for continuing the Doc Savage adventures in the pulp tradition wrote some of the The Destroyer novels for about a decade from the late 1980s to the 1990s.
The Destroyer novels are tongue-firmly-in-cheek adventure novels that mixtures humor, satire, with heavy dozes of violence and death. Mom and Dad loved listening to these adaptations of the later books in the series released by GraphicAudo, and yes, this has been sitting in my tsundoku, my antilibrary of audio drama CDs that is sitting on top of the massive oak roll top accountant's desk in my sister's old bedroom - which is now my default storage space.
It does help to be aware of the story lines that run through The Destroyer series. In "Target of Opportunity," Remo has seemingly quit CURE and is on a one man mission to clean up the crime that is plaguing Florida's theme park industry, when he is called back into duty once more over the apparent assassination of the President of the United States by someone who is the spitting image of Lee Harvey Oswald.
With Smith still trying to rebuild's CURE's network after it was previously destroyed, and Remo and Chiun are running up against blind end after blind end as time is running out to uncover who is trying to kill the President and why.
