so i’ve been rereading gail simone’s run on the original birds of prey. it’s—duh—amazeballs, but there’s one issue in particular that just smacked me in the face. it’s issue #89 and it features two of the greatest scenes that i’ve ever read in one comic. first, babs reveals to her father that she is oracle. the ensuing conversation honestly brought on the tears. so thanks, gail, for making me feel like the nerdiest of nerds for almost losing it over a comic book.
second, this panel (and the larger conversation that takes place). babs doesn’t take batman’s shit and i can almost feel the pride emanating from the commissioner.
just had to throw that out there.
I don’t normally write Batman-as-jerk, I find that trope pretty thin and uninteresting. But in this case, we were matching some things that had been building up in both Birds of Prey and Batman’s own books for a while, and I wanted to show Barbara as having outgrown being intimidated. She was never a sidekick, she won’t be in Batgirl, either.
But the best part of writing these issues was Gordon. Just him saying, “I’m listening,” socked me right in the gut…how many of us would love to have a father say that?
