One of the things I play with in the Humanityโ€™s Dawn timeline is the effect interstellar separation has on humanity when they are separated by great distances.

In my timeline, in 2610, the Alcubierre anti-matter drive is invented. This enables humanity to travel at 5000 times the speed of light and opens up the Milky Way galaxy for exploration, with it now being possible to transit it within 20 years. When near instantaneous travel, which I term as Time Dilation Travel (TDT) in the book is then invented in 3434, it all comes to a head in 3540 when the Identity Wars begin.

In short, despite humanityโ€™s greatest efforts. With people spreading out across the cosmos they become quite isolated and indifferent from one another. Suddenly the idea of centralised government is no longer appealing to everyone. With different groups having different needs and ideas, humanity becomes fractured!

What do you think? Weโ€™ve seen this happen in the Americaโ€™s; is this an inevitable consequence of expansion and exploration? Is it a good thing or not?
