It's definitely not what I look for in my YA, as it hits a little too close to reality. I'm glad I took the chance on it after reading Scythe, but it caused me some IRL stress and made me very thankful for living in a rainy, cooler area. It's well rated and a good read IMO, but I could see others wanting more far flung fantasy or less life-and-death issues to face. The sweet spot in-between is almost it's own genre of modern horror.

It was frighteningly realistic, but so well written. I've included it in my classroom library with other dystopian titles, and I've had quite a few of my 8th graders choose to read it over the past few years. There are some who didn't finish because it was too close to a possible reality, but overwhelmingly kids have enjoyed it. A few have even become future activists, researching climate change and water preservation.
Made me cry, it is such a good book and I recently finished Scythe which was amazing!!! You truly have a gift for storytellingI will never look at water the same way again after reading this book
