The Weekly Rune – Berkana

Berkana is the half-month rune through 30 March. The intuitive rune is Hagalaz. The earthly spirit of place anchoring the runes this week is Uninvited Guest (spiraled hag stone), in the direction of Beyond/All Things (world marble), with element Stone (bottle of amber), in the season of Summer (tree button). Berkana is a rune of tending and being tended. It comes after deep tribulation, the kind that makes us fear for our lives, the greater good kind, the aggrieved sacrifice kind. So, the lead-in from Tiwaz lingers into our experience of Berkana. There is a sort of spa quality to the care this rune bestows, perhaps even medicinal. It also brings a somewhat present-focused state, in that we are solely tending Self in the moment and not projecting ahead for what comes next. I approach this runic space as rehabilitation: we’re not what we used to be, we are not who we are becoming, yet are shifting throughout.
