An early Sunday morning in February. The master behind the sounds that have thrilled video game fans for decades appears on the computer screen, live from Tokyo: Nobuo Uematsu, composer of the music for the Final Fantasy game series. He sits in a good mood in his black hoodie in his Dog Ear Records studio, in the background you can see a white synthesizer and next to it on the wall a sign that says: Never, never, never give up. A motto that you hear when playing games as Final Fantasy may have all too often in the back of our minds. The second part of a remake of Final Fantasy VII with a piece by Uematsu will be released on Thursday, and at the same time an entire orchestral work by Uematsu will be premiered in Germany. So it’s high time for a conversation with the soundtrack superstar of the gaming world.
