CRAZY CONCEPTS - QUANTUM TUNNELLING!
πππππ ππππππππ β πππππππ ππππππππππ!

Quantum tunnelling is best defined as quantum particles being able to penetrate a barrier, despite not having enough energy to do so! To frame this in your mind this is like being able to push a boulder up a hill without expending any energy (see picture)!
A very eloquent way of putting it is that βa tunnelling particle gets around a barrier by moving from A to B without going through the space in betweenβ.
Currently, at practical levels of application, we must look to the microprocessor industry. Quantum tunnelling effects are both a blessing in semiconductor microelectronics and a curse. As the transistors get smaller, as we increase processing power, we are now starting to reach the limit where the effect will soon be able to overcome the resilience of all useable materials (the barrier). This means quantum tunnelling will make it impossible to turn devices off if we go too far (so there is a limit)!

For many years now people have been trying to invent the perpetual motion machine, where the energy you get out is greater than the energy you put in, without any interference from an outside system (as some of the greatest scandals have shown)!
To this date everyone has failed due to the conservation of energy law, but could quantum tunnelling, that seems to fly in the face of this law, be the key?
What do you think? Is unlimited energy just a quantum barrier away?
REQUEST: Please do ask questions, you donβt have to be a physicist to join in these discussions and I will eject anyone from the conversation that is being a know it all. I want everyone to engage, not just a select few. There is no such thing as a stupid question, with questions often adding more to the debate in my experience π
