Editor Tips: Build a Strong Author Platform

The final tip I received from an Editor was to build a strong author platform.  It strikes me that it is an easy phrase to say, but a hard task to accomplish.  I look at some of my favorite authors who are still actively publishing, and I see them blogging on GoodReads, updating their social media platforms, maintaining a stand-alone website or online presence, and working with their publisher to keep their name and stories top-of-mind for readers.  It quickly begins to look like a full-time job!  Let’s take a look at the top ten things that should be considered in building a strong author platform.

Author Website: A professional and user-friendly author website serves as your online hub. Include an engaging author bio, information about your books, a contact page, and links to your social media profiles. Consider adding a blog to share your thoughts, writing process, and updates with your audience.Active Social Media Presence: Choose social media platforms where your target audience is likely to be present. Maintain active and engaging profiles on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, GoodReads, or others relevant to your genre. Share content related to your writing journey, book updates, and interact with your followers.Email Newsletter: Building an email list is a powerful way to directly connect with your readers. Blogs can replace or add-to the power of an email list, members that register for email newsletters are more likely to engage with your content and become fans helping promote your stories. Offer incentives, such as exclusive content or promotions, to encourage readers to subscribe to your newsletter. Regularly share updates, behind-the-scenes insights, and news about upcoming releases.Consistent Branding: Maintain a consistent and recognizable brand across all your online platforms. This includes using a consistent author photo, similar graphics, and a cohesive theme that reflects your writing style and genre. Consistent branding helps readers easily identify and remember you.Engagement in Online Communities: Participate in online communities relevant to your genre or writing niche. This could include forums, writing groups, or social media groups. Engage in discussions, share insights, and connect with other authors and readers. Building relationships in these communities can expand your reach and support network.Content Creation: Regularly create and share valuable content that resonates with your audience. This could include blog posts, articles, videos, or podcast episodes related to your writing, genre, or interests. Providing content that adds value to your readers’ lives can help foster a deeper connection.Book Launch Strategy: Plan a comprehensive strategy for launching your books. This includes pre-launch activities, such as cover reveals and teaser campaigns, as well as post-launch efforts like virtual book tours, giveaways, and ongoing promotional activities. Leverage your platform to generate excitement around your releases.Interaction with Readers: Actively engage with your readers by responding to comments on social media, emails, or blog posts. Building a personal connection with your audience can lead to a loyal fan base that supports your work and recommends it to others.
