Do you think like a villain?
When I plot out mysteries, I often take time out to think plotlines through from the villain's perspective. You don't want just black and white villains who are bad because they're bad. They need to have goals and wishes of their own. It makes them interesting and less one-dimensional.
In my book
The Poisoned Clergyman, I have a female villain who will do anything she can to get what she wants, including take advantage of the main character for her own ends. Will she get her comeuppance? You'll have to read to find out. But writing her was a fun exercise for me in writing about villains.
Here's a great post on why writers should think like villains when designing twists and turns in their books.
