What do you do – when you find a dead man's phone? Not just a dead man's phone, but a phone filled with messages from the woman who still loves him? And when you try to give it back ... she yells at you!

Blaze Cross doesn't want drama. He doesn't do drama. In fact, he normally doesn't even do people. He's a small town veterinarian, who specializes in horses. When he goes to Kentucky to meet with a horse dealer who might know something about the Conquistador Gold, he picks up a stray phone on the ground. One he means to get back to the owner, until he's searched by drug dogs at the airport. Later, when the phone keeps going off, he finds himself reading messages. Messages he shouldn't be reading, but can't stop.

Eden Cappa doesn't want to be stuck in grief. It's been almost a year since her husband passed and between her time in a hospital to get help and the time she spends defending herself to her family that she REALLY is okay, all she wants to do is get away from it all. But she never expected to lose the phone. The only thing that's kept her connected to the man she loved. The only thing thing that allows her to still hear his voice.

When Blaze and Eden find themselves thrown together to help out a giant Husky dog, something starts to happen between them. Something that this horse vet never anticipated; he starts to fall in love.

Will discovering the secret Blaze has kept from her take away all chances of them being together?
Will Eden's history with the Conquistador Gold be the next clue in the puzzle ... or will they team up and find it together?

As the Cross siblings get tested, they find they have to do the one thing their father always wanted them to do; trust each other and protect the land that is their legacy.

**Excerpt:**
It was fun to flirt. “Is this your act? The mysterious cowboy from out of town.”

“What would I need an act for?”

That made her smile. He was confident enough that he didn’t understand why he would pretend to be anything but himself. “An act for the ladies. To make them interested in you. Don’t they have, like, a whole dating system built around being all mysterious? I think I watched a Netflix documentary on it.”

He chuckled. “I wouldn’t know the first thing about that. But—not to change topics—you like watching documentaries about dating?”

She laughed. “No. I mean, yes. There was this whole thing with a guy I follow who was in it, so I guess I did watch a documentary on dating.”

He leaned in, putting his elbows on the table as he grabbed another chip. “I watch documentaries on animals and the world wars and stupid stuff with my brothers all the time. Random things like snakes and conspiracies.”

She had no desire to talk about dating, so she pounced on this new topic. “What conspiracies?”

He took a bite of the chip. “There’s this one about Rattlesnake Ranch in Utah. A guy did a whole documentary on it. It delves into the supernatural. He brought this team together, and they studied these crazy incidents that have happened where all the machines on the farm have been moved. They found old body remains in a basement and stuff like that.” He looked a tad embarrassed. “Not that I believe that stuff, but it’s fun to watch.”

“I’ve never heard of that documentary.”

“You should watch it.”

She grinned. “Maybe. So tell me more about your family.”

“You want to hear about my five crazy brothers and my little sister?”

“That is a big family.”

“Yes, it is.”

“You met Frankie and his bad attitude. I think I deserve to hear about your crazy brothers.”

Blaze laughed. “I don’t know why Frankie doesn’t like me.”

“He doesn’t like anyone.”

“I can understand that. He’s protective of his sister.”

She nodded, conceding to that idea. “A bit more than protective, I would say, but yes.”

“That would be okay if I was a psycho, but he treated me like I should be put in jail for parking in his spot.”

She giggled. “Don’t worry about Frankie. He’s always been suspicious of people, and he likes to start a fight.”

“Thanks. But I won’t lie. Going into that café is intimidating.”

“Yet I still saw you today.”

His eyes turned serious. “Maybe I don’t go for your brother.”

There it was: electricity and attraction pulsing through her. She couldn’t help but twirl a strand of hair around her finger. She didn’t know what to say. “Well, the coffee is good.”

Blaze cocked an eyebrow. “Yeah, but there are lots of places I could get coffee.”
Fine. If this man wanted to tango, then she would tango. “Then why do you go?”
He hesitated, and he was saved by the server putting their food on the table. Her meal was steaming, but she wasn’t just happy about the food. Blaze wasn’t as calm and collected as he appeared to be.

The server asked if they needed anything else, and when both of them said no, she left them to it.

Eden took a bite of her food and closed her eyes for a second. “It’s as good as I remember.” Her eyes flashed open and met his. He hadn’t taken a bite yet; he was only staring at her. “What?”

“Nothing. It’s just nice to see a woman enjoying her food.”

She couldn’t help but smile. It was stupid how silly she felt on this date. Everything the man said made her want to laugh. It was like when she’d had Tony with her.
No. She wouldn’t compare everything to Tony. That wasn’t healthy.

“What?”

She took another bite. “Nothing.”

He hesitated and then took a bite of his food. “I don’t know your expressions very well, but your face changed for a second.”

“I just love this food,” she said, uncomfortable that he’d noticed. “That’s all.”

He nodded and then smiled at her. “This is some of the best Mexican food I’ve had.”
She nodded in agreement and continued to eat. “I’m starving. I guess doing animal surgery makes you hungry.” She didn’t mention that it was easy for her not to eat. So many times over the past year, her mother had told her she needed to eat more because she looked like a skeleton. She frowned. “I wonder how Shaggy is doing.”

Blaze took a sip. “He’ll be fine, but let’s check in on him tomorrow.”

She liked that he talked about them doing it together. “Uh, yeah.”

“Okay, I shared about Rattlesnake Ranch. Why don’t you tell me about some conspiracy you know about?” He gestured to her with his fork. “Unless you want to talk about the dating documentary again.”

“No. I don’t.” She laughed again. “I will think of some conspiracy to tell you. In the meantime, tell me what you’re doing until Saturday when the horse guy gets in town to meet with you.”

“Actually, this is what I’m doing. I mean,” he said, a slight smile on his lips, “if you’ll let me, I’ll hang out with you.”

The tension between them grew thick. Was he hitting on her? She looked down at her food. “I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.”

“Did that make you uncomfortable? I’m sorry. I just meant maybe you’d want to go to dinner tomorrow. I’m sure you’re working, but we could do something if you’re not.”
“I’m not,” she said quickly. His words were exactly what she’d needed to hear. The event was tomorrow night with everyone from the University of Kentucky. Everyone she didn’t want to see. Plus, Sharon had everything handled anyway, so she really didn’t need to be there. “Working, I mean.” She felt herself blush. She cleared her throat and stared into his aqua eyes. “I mean, I’d love to hang out. I could show you around, but I don’t know what you like to do.” She really didn’t want to take him to the places she and Tony used to go.

“Hiking,” he said. “I’d like to go hiking if you want to.”
