Hakuho to pull out or make-koshi??
In response to recent requests from Japanese facebookers I started this blog in Japanese today. God, my Japanese writing style is so dry. Even with beer inside I can't make it very creative or interesting! So, time to let creative juices flow here.
What on earth is Hakuho doing???? 2 losses already after just 7 days. You'd have to go back an incredibly long time for the last such instance: at a guess, I'd say at least 2006. We know he got a toe injury in January, but that didn't seem to affect him in March. Which naturally leads me to cast aspersions on the powers that be, and the sheer convenience of a situation which sees sumo desperate to reduce ozeki numbers and Hakuho obligingly losing so that one of them can win the championship and boost promotion chances.
Maybe.
When Hakuho was unbeatable two years ago, the fighting spirit prize was barely awarded at all! Now, three contenders are up for it in just the first week. Aminishiki has already beaten Hakuho and two strong Ozeki, but has looked weak against others and may lose the prize. Toyohibiki has also beaten Hakuho and Kotooshu while Miyogiryu - in makishita just over a year ago - has now beaten three Ozeki in three days. That is truly incredible, and a sign of real hope that a fresh Japanese star may be in the making.
And perhaps two others are in the making also. Despite losing to Miyogiryu today, Kotoshogiku is still in the lead with 6 wins. He is joined there by Kisenosato. Mongolian Kakuryu is also on 6 and desperate to go one better than his runner-up showing last time.
The question now is: Hakuho has two losses. He must still face Goeido and six Ozeki. Could this be the first time he pulls out as a Yokozuna? Because of the form book keeps its shape, he 's going for make-koshi!!
