15 Encouraging Quotes About Change
We’re already halfway through January 2024.
I don’t know about you, but that statement sounds crazy to me. 2024 just started. I’m still in my start-of-the-new-year mode, with tons of goals, plans, hopes, dreams, and ideas that I wanted to implement.
Even if you’re not the type of person to do New Year’s resolutions (I’m not either!), I think that most of us enter new years with hopes and expectations of change. Usually positive, but we’d be foolish to think that other kinds of change won’t happen at some point. Hard change. Possibly necessary change.
Change can happen at any time. It doesn’t need to start in January. It usually won’t.
And, at least for me, change can be both exciting and scary.
I long for it, but at the same time, avoid it. I’m so glad that in the end, it’s God who’s in charge. I just need to be open for the changes that He wants to make in my life, and trust His process. It’s infinitely better than mine!
Of course I have hopes for change in 2024, some of which I’ve already started implementing, and some that I don’t plan to start for a few months yet. Changes to my schedule, to my health, to my work patterns, and to my meals…so many things. And I plan to keep consulting with God as I work on them.
Something else that I like to do, besides pray, when I’m contemplating a certain subject – in this case, change – is to see what other people that I respect have to say about it. So here are fifteen of my favorite Christian quotes that I’ve found on the subject of change. If you’re contemplating change this year as well, I hope these reminders bring you some encouragement and clarity!
(Disclaimer: Me sharing these quotes doesn’t mean that I agree with everything that someone has said, or share 100% of their values. I do, however, agree and appreciate the quote.)
1. “We cannot change our past. We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.”
(Chuck Swindoll)
2. “Will power does not change men. Time does not change men. Christ does.”
(Henry Drummond)
3. “Wherever the Bible has been consistently applied, it has dramatically changed the civilization and culture of those who have accepted its teaching. No other book has ever so dramatically changed the individual lives and society in general.”
(John F. Walvoord)
4. “Sociologists have a theory of the looking-glass self: you become what the most important person in your life (wife, father, boss, etc.) thinks you are. How would my life change if I truly believed the Bible’s astounding words about God’s love for me, if I looked in the mirror and saw what God sees?”
(Phillip Yancey)
5. “Change always starts in your mind. The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel influences the way you act.”
(Rick Warren)
6. “For you who wonder if you’ve played too long to change, take courage from Jacob’s legacy. No man is too bad for God. To transform a riverboat gambler into a man of faith would be no easy task. But for God, it was all in a night’s work.”
(Max Lucado)
7. “Nothing paralyzes our lives like the attitude that things can never change. We need to remind ourselves that God can change things. Outlook determines outcome. If we see only the problems, we will be defeated; but if we see the possibilities in the problems, we can have victory.”
(Warren Wierbse)
8. “We can create as magnificent an environment as we like, but unless we change the heart it’s all a waste of time.”
(John Hagee)
9. “Often times God demonstrates His faithfulness in adversity by providing for us what we need to survive. He does not change our painful circumstances. He sustains us through them.”
(Charles Stanley)
10. “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. It doesn’t change God – it changes me.”
(C. S. Lewis)
11. “All change comes from deepening your understanding of the salvation of Christ and living out the changes that understanding creates in your heart.”
(Tim Keller)
12. “When we wrap our minds and hearts around God’s gracious work in the gospel and root ourselves in Jesus, we find the strength and power to change, because the power to change comes from him alone.“
(Matt Eachus)
13. “God is unchanging. The weather changes. Fashion changes. Even change changes. God has not changed and cannot and will not ever change.“
(Max Lucado)
14. “We need God’s guidance whether we are at a certain crossroad, making life changing, path altering decisions, or as we go through the day.“
(Shannon Scott)
15. “God changes people in a way that no one else can. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, or what sins you have committed. God washes away all of it.“
(K. J. Bryen)
