Published in 2015. Fantasy. Celaena Sardothien assumes her inherited title as Queen of Terrasen, Aelin. She returns to Rifthold with two goals in mind: free her cousin Aedion from the King’s dungeon and restore magic to the world. At the same time, she finds the presence of demonic beings called the Valg have penetrated the Kingdom, taking over the body of her friend, Prince Dorian. Meanwhile, the witches of Blackbeak had been called upon to serve the King and prepare for battle on their wyverns, but are forced to accept the orders of the Duke, a mortal man they despise.
While I enjoy reading this author’s books, she spent a great deal of time preparing for the rescue of her cousin, without letting the reader know what she had in store. The actual rescue was quick and almost too easy, but when she gets him to safety, she treats him poorly even kicking him out of her apartment while the King’s soldiers search for him.
The author spends a great deal of time on the witches and their preparations, when they are not even needed for the denouement of the book. Perhaps, the next book? There are three more books in this series, even though Aelin accomplishes her goals. I think this may be the end of the trail for me.
